 Farm Street 175

4. Second World War

During the Blitz, severe damage was inflicted on the church. Between September 1940 and April 1941 bombs hit the church roof and organ loft, and many of the windows were blown out, including the window above the high altar and the rose window. The Community at 114 Mount Street remained, and the cellars of 114 Mount Street were used as night shelters for the people of Mayfair, but the church was closed and services were continued in the Sodality Hall and Chapel until 1942. After the war, repairs were supervised by the architect Adrian Gilbert Scott (1882-1963) and were not completed until 1951. In 1953 stained glass by the Irish artist Evie Hone (1894-1955) depicting the Instruments of the Passion, was installed in the south front’s rose window to replace the one that had been destroyed.
