Our Services

Information about the services that we provide and books available to buy from the Archives.

Research service

Staff are unable to undertake detailed research on behalf of enquirers however limited research enquiries can be carried out free of charge.

What a limited research enquiry includes can vary depending on the nature of the enquiry, for example we are able to provide basic biographical information such as date of birth, entrance to the Society, ordination and death, and potentially an obituary for dead Jesuits of the Province. We are not able to carry out in depth or obscure research which would require more than a reasonable amount of time (c.30 minutes) unless payment was made for undertaking this work. Payment would not guarantee a result as we can only supply information that is held. If you are uncertain whether your enquiry would require a more detailed search, please contact the Archivist to discuss. The Archivist will always advise researchers whether we are able to assist with an enquiry and whether a charge will apply prior to doing the work.

Volunteering

We can provide opportunities for people to gain experience of working in an Archives either as ongoing volunteers or through work experience placements. We recognise that volunteering/placements can provide a valuable contribution to our work in making the records of the Jesuits in Britain accessible to the public and that this can be a rewarding experience for individuals, but given resource constraints we are not able to accept all who express an interest. Where possible we will try to match tasks to particular interests and provide as broad an experience of archival work.

If you would like to volunteer, please get in touchYou can read testimonials and about the work done by past volunteers/placements here.

Reproductions

Digitising records is suitable for most document types, but is an enormous task. Please note that the preservation of records is vital and some material is not suitable for reproduction.

We supply digital copies (normally jpegs or PDFs) via web transfer or email. Reproductions ordered for non-commercial use, including processing costs, will be charged as follows:

First 10 images/scans FREE

Each additional image £1

An estimate of how much it will cost to complete a requested job will be provided prior to the work being carried out. Large orders (e.g. an entire volume of bound manuscripts) will be charged at set fees rather than per image, which the Archivist will advise on.

Although reproductions may be supplied, no rights to publish is given without seeking appropriate permission.

If you are interested in this service please contact the Archivist who can advise on a case-by-case basis.
